10 Horror Remakes You Didn’t Know Were Coming In 2019
7. Pet Sematary
The Original: Mary
Lambert’s middling big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s rather grim novel
failed to set critics alight back in 1989 but was a modest box office success
and gained something of a cult following in the years after its release.
With a screenplay penned by the King of Horror himself, the original Pet Sematary is said by fans to be one of the more faithful of his book to movie adaptations.
The Remake: Helmed by directing duo Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer who proved their horror chops with Kickstarter funded SXSW hit Starry Eyes in 2014, the all-new Pet Sematary is set for an April 2019 release.
Taking over screenwriting duties from King are another dynamic duo: David Kajganich, who also wrote the screenplay for Luca Guadagnino’s Dario Argento’s forthcoming Suspiria remake, and Jeff Buhler who’s penning the scripts behind two other 2019 horror remakes (The Grudge and Jacob’s Ladder).
Filming has only just begun so the plot deets are scarce apart from an official synopsis from distributors Paramount that seems to imply the remake will be sticking closely to both the book and original film.
Whether the new Pet Sematary will live up to the standard set by successful recent King adaptations like It and Gerald’s Game or be yet another crappy King adaptation remains to be seen.
