For many, this juggernaut of a series is the best zombie TV show out there. And in many respects, that’s true. It’s gritty, emotional, bloody scary and has become an icon of pop culture. Nobody can look at a baseball bat these days without wincing a little.

The human characters drive the heart of this show, with well developed arcs that really made audiences care about them. One of these characters was Carl Grimes.

Watching him grow from just an innocent kid into a hardened warrior who tried to do the right thing in an unforgiving world was both interesting and heart-breaking – but at least fans of the comics knew he was going to get a happy ending!

Then Season Eight happened. In a horrifying twist of events, Carl was bitten by a walker. This was hugely surprising, leaving both viewers and Rick reeling.
