10 Huge Movies That Were Instantly Forgotten
6. Australia
Love or hate the flamboyant style of Baz Luhrmann, his films tend to be extremely difficult to forget, their sensory barrages and stacked casts generally ensuring they linger around in the public consciousness for a good while.
But his 2008 epic Australia is a film that just came and went without making a dent. The Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman-starring drama, widely expected to be a major awards contender, released to middling reviews and poor box office, and ultimately scored just a single Oscar nod for Best Costume Design.
The film quickly slid from memory and everyone moved on with their lives, enough that Luhrmann was able to repackage the movie as a mini-series 15 years later without most people noticing.
Last year, Luhrmann released Faraway Downs, a six-part mini-series re-edit of the movie, including roughly 40 minutes of previously unseen material.
Unsurprisingly adding even more to the original film's already overstuffed canvas didn't exactly win it many new fans, but at least it reminded a few people that Australia actually existed.
