10 Huge Questions That Undermine Back To The Future

9. Why Does Lorraine's Dad Question A Street Name?

Time travel fiction is good for those "I know something you don't" jokes. You know the type: person from our time goes back, mentions something from modern culture and confuses everyone. Back to the Future's full of these jokes, the best probably being Marty's rendition of 'Johnny B Goode' which only shocks his audience. Imagine if he'd have showed them dubstep. Another one of these jokes occurs while Marty's having a meal with his mother and his grandparents, as he mentions John F Kennedy Drive. "Who the hell is John F Kennedy?" his granddad retorts. The joke is that in 1955, no one knew who JFK was. Only this joke's not quite as good... Because since when has anyone ever questioned a street name? If I told you I lived down Gary Smith Street or Tim Henderson Road, would you ask who those people are? In fact, if this wasn't a time travel film, I doubt anyone would question anything peculiar that Marty says: they'd just smile and nod, or have in-depth and unknowingly insightful conversations. Which would make the film an awful lot shorter, and probably more boring, but definitely more realistic.
