10 Huge Recent Movie Moments That Fell Totally Flat

2. Deepfake Ian Holm - Alien: Romulus

Alien: Romulus gets a lot right, but even many who loved the movie had to take umbrage with one of its more overzealous "memberberries" moments - the digital recreation of the late Ian Holm.

Holm of course played malevolent android Ash in the original Alien, and a science officer android named Rook appears in Romulus bearing Ash's exact likeness, and therefore also Holm's.

Unfortunately, the VFX tech used to recreate Holm's appearance from Alien just doesn't pass muster - it's intensely distracting almost every time he's on screen, looking like a naff deepfake a half-way talented artist could cook up on their home computer in an afternoon.

There really wasn't any need for Rook to be an Ash-like other than to cheaply milk the original film for every nostalgic drop.

And even though the production obviously secured the approval of Holm's estate to appropriate his likeness, it still can't help but feel a bit crassly ghoulish, especially as Holm himself is unable to consent to his image being used in this way.

Hollywood, please just let dead actors rest.
