3. Droids Feel Pain... For Some Reason

In Return of the Jedi, you might recall that we briefly see droids being tortured in Jabba's Palace, namely a gonk droid whose feet are branded as it screams out in apparent pain.

Except, why on Earth would a droid feel pain, being, y'know, a droid and all?

While in the original trilogy we saw C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) appear to experience both pleasure (the oil bath) and pain (Chewie hits his head on the Falcon), this doesn't quite vibe with the events of Attack of the Clones, where Threepio is straight-up dismantled without appearing to be hurt at all.

Beyond any philosophical discussions about whether droids are feeling pain or the pre-programmed illusion of pain, one has to again ask - why? What possible benefit could it offer anyone?

There's never been a clear answer about this, and beyond perhaps heightening a droid's self-preservation potential, there don't seem to be many upsides to allowing droids to feel a distinctly human emotion.
