James Bond is something of a British institution, and has become one of the biggest and most well-known movie franchises in the world. Being portrayed in 25 movies, across more than six decades, by six actors, there are few cinematic characters quite like 007.

Fans however, put together a famous theory that there were actually six characters exactly like James Bond, as each different iteration of 007 was thought to be a genuinely different person. The theory dubbed ‘Codename Bond’ by the internet suggested that these six men were all completely separate people, but were given the codename of James Bond, as well as 007.

This made sense in a lot of ways. As spies, it would be almost second nature to use an alias of some sort, and on a more obvious level, it would explain why James Bond has been active for so many years and has repeatedly changed his appearance. From Sean Connery to Daniel Craig, the James Bonds brought to life on screen were different men with the same codename.

This long-believed theory however, was ultimately put to bed during Skyfall. Daniel Craig’s third outing as James Bond took him back to his childhood home, where the tombstones of his parents confirmed that Bond was in fact a family name, and not one that just came along with the 007 code.
