10 Hugely Successful Movies That Amazingly Never Got Sequels

8. Mamma Mia!

Mamma MiaBox Office: $602,500,560 Mamma Mia was a tremendous box office success, coasting on the success of the acclaimed stage show, the general popularity of ABBA, and the so-bad-it's-good appeal of watching talented actors thoroughly embarrassing themselves for our pleasure. Even fans of the film will readily admit that it was a cornball cringe-fest, but that seems to be a large part of the appeal; get tanked up on drinks and watch Pierce Brosnan painfully trying to make his way through S.O.S. David Linde, co-chairman of Universal, declared enthusiasm for a sequel if ABBA would agree to it, given the sheer wealth of songs from the band's back catalogue that could be used. While a direct movie sequel without a stage-show sequel to accompany it is certainly risky business, it's not exactly like anyone went to see the first movie because of the plot, now, is it?
