10 Hugely Successful Movies You Didn't Realise LOST Money

7. The Exorcism Of Emily Rose

The Exorcism of Emily Rose isn't exactly remembered as a benchmark for horror cinema, but it is an interesting lens into the first steps of director Scott Derrickson, who went onto direct the far more compelling Sinister, and MCU entry Doctor Strange.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose wasn't a particularly expensive film, costing only $19 million to produce. While horror films tend to cost less (just look at the minuscule budgets of the Paranormal Activity films), $19 million isn't a massive investment for a studio.

And the small budget appeared to work in the films favor as it went on to make more than $145 million worldwide - a seemingly strong amount.

According to Derrickson though, it never actually turned a profit.

When signing on to the project, Derrickson negotiated 5% of the gross, an amount he never received. He explained that because of all the additional fees the studio tacked on, including a large marketing budget, there was no profit to give to him.

Derrickson lamented that had the film been made for cheaper (like many other horror films), he could have seen some of that gross.
