When Star Wars: The Force Awakens drew to a close, there were many questions left unanswered. However, one of the most pertinent issues was the identity of The First Order's Supreme Leader Snoke. Even though he was set up as the new Emperor, little was given away about Kylo Ren's master, encouraging fans to devise all sorts of theories surrounding him.

Leading up to the release of The Last Jedi, the Star Wars community was still speculating about the deformed Sith's true identity. Was he Darth Plagueis? The Grand Inquisitor? Someone from the Star Wars games or novels? A completely new character?

In the end, Snoke's backstory was irrelevant. Halfway through The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren abruptly kills his master before anything is revealed about him. This Sith Lord was built up as the overarching antagonist of the new Star Wars trilogy and yet, he went out like a chump.

Although Snoke was retconned in The Rise of Skywalker as a clone of Emperor Palpatine, this revelation intensified the fans' fury. This twist wasn't just predictable, but lazy. Rather than allowing Snoke be his own character, he was repurposed as a mere plot device.
