10 Hyped Movie Characters (That Did Absolutely Nothing)

6. Venom - Spider-Man 3

It's surreal how giddy the masses were for Spider-Man 3, considering how badly it turned out. But back in 2007, Spidey fanatics couldn't wait for the threequel, since the Wall-crawler would duke it out with Eddie Brock, aka Venom.

Although Topher Grace's casting threw everyone off, the awesome trailers put that initial scepticism to rest. Since the promos emphasised the alien symbiote story would serve as the meat of the plot, it felt like the beloved villain would be done right.

But since Venom is only in Spider-Man 3 for six minutes, Topher Grace doesn't get a chance to do anything with the role. However, this might be a good thing, since Grace's performance is utterly devoid of menace. Instead of speaking in a monstrous tone, Grace uses his regular voice as Venom, which comes across as unintentionally hilarious.

Then there's Venom design. Instead of resembling an extra-terrestrial, the supervillain looks like Spider-Man with a CGI mouth. And when he takes off the mask, it's tough not to laugh at Brock's cartoonishly arched eyebrows and tacked-on fangs.

Venom may not have been the worst part of Spider-Man 3 (that's the dance sequence), but he was definitely a disappointment.
