3. Batman vs. Mutant Leader - Dark Knight Returns

Years after Bats has retired his cape and cowl (an emotional response to the previously mentioned death of Jason Todd - which at the time of writing had just occurred), a brutal gang of street punks have taken over Gotham, lead by a hulking monster of a man who proves to be one of Bats all time greatest foes.

Attacking him head on, like old times, Batman is quickly defeated and almost meets an untimely end, until the new Robin rescues him, and Alfred patches him up. Bats realises that the only way to defeat this hulk of a foe is to surrender his ego, admit to himself that he cannot match the mutant leader physically and use his true strength to claim victory - his mind.

What follows is a battle for the ages in which Bats proves once and for all that, one way or the other, if you tangle with a bat, you get bit.
