6. Joey Peterson - A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 represents the ultimate film wet dream, shocking teenage boys around the world and plummeting the sales of water beds nationwide. The scene in question sees veteran from the third film, Joey, meet his demise in a premise reminiscent of Jonny Depp's bed scene from original. It had everything you could look for in a horror death- Gratuitous nudity, an electro 80's soundtrack and a classic Freddy one liner "How's this for a wet dream." After falling asleep Joey is pulled into a water bed and the red dye starts to flow; one question, why does his mother not question how he became sealed inside a water bed? What makes Joey's death that little bit more iconic is the inclusion of pin up model Hope Marie Carlton as herself. It was a big coup for the directors to get the 'Playboy' model in the film- ultimately it is her breasts that lure Joey to his death. The problem with 'The Dream Master' is that it is one of those films that gets lost in the middle of a franchise. At this point Englund had been playing Freddy for four years, almost consecutively, becoming little more that a melted faced comic distraction. 'The Dream Master' and the following NoES films tend to stray into the farcical from this point onwards; re-watching they fall into the campy late 80's genre. However, Englund maintains that 'The Dream Master' is his favourite of the films. Despite its flaws the fourth film was the most successful in the franchise prior to 2003's 'Freddy vs. Jason'. Sadly the same can't be said for Freddy's latest incarnation. 2010's box office flop came with Jackie Earle Haley donning the sweater and fedora, unfortunately for the time being this could be the end of Freddy. What was planned as a whole new franchise was less of a nightmare and more of a cat nap.
