8. Michael Myers

The first two Halloween films showed Michael Myers as a young boy who killed his sister, then escaped from a mental institution as an adult and went after teenager Laurie Strode. It was then revealed Laurie was Michael’s other sister and Michael ends up presumably dying in an explosion.

The fourth, fifth and sixth films changed direction, introducing his niece Jamie, and a storyline about a cult cursing him to kill his family and trying to clone him as Jaime’s baby.

The reboot in 1998 disregarded the cult storyline and revealed Laurie Strode had faked her death and been in hiding for 20 years with her son. The film ends with her chopping Michael’s head off with an axe. However, the twist in the next film shows Laurie had instead killed someone dressed as Michael and he finds her again and kills her.

Rob Zombie then remade the original, showing Michael growing up in the institution. It was implied he wanted to have a relationship with Laurie, kidnapping her and trying to show her that they were family. He also has visions of his mother and this continuity ended with him being killed and Laurie apparently taking on his personality.

In a further reboot in 2018, Michael escapes after being institutionalised for 40 years and tracks down Laurie, now an old woman with a daughter and granddaughter. The film ends with them leaving him burning in the basement, but it is implied he survives, as two more films are planned for this instalment.
