10 Iconic Movie Costumes Actors Hated Wearing
2. Buddy Ebsen – The Tin Man
The Wizard of Oz has remained a quintessential cinema experience since its release in 1939. For over eight decades, the story of a girl far away from home has resinated with generation after generation, inspiring everything from Pez dispensers to pro-wrestling characters.
While Judy Garland and co. have lived on in the imaginations of the public, one actor had costume complications so bad they led to his removal from the final cast.
While Jack Haley portrayed the Tin Man that stole our hearts, the role was initially filled by Buddy Ebsen. Ebsen was actually cast as the Scarecrow and Ray Bolger (the eventual screen Scarecrow) the Tin Man. When Ebsen agreed to swap roles, he couldn't have known the unfortunate turn of events he'd triggered.
The original make-up that gave the Tin Man his metallic sheen covered the skin well, however, it contained aluminium powder. After repeated applications, this ingredient began to severely affect Ebsen's lungs. He inhaled so much aluminium powder that it almost killed him. With Ebsen hospitalised, he was forced to relinquish the role to Haley.
Thankfully, Ebsen still became a screen icon starring in Breakfast at Tiffany's and conquering the small screen as the leading man in The Beverly Hillbillies and Barnaby Jones.
