5. Lt. Frank Drebin - The Naked Gun Series
Many refer to Frank Drebin as the American Clouseau and there are similarities but ultimately, Drebin is an accident prone beast all his own. Again, for the sake of time here, we'll focus on the first of the Naked Gun movies. One main difference between Drebin and Clouseau is that Drebin does so many things right. He's cocky like Clouseau but at times he can pull it off. Ultimately, and to our great pleasure, Drebin always finds a chance to get in his own way. In fact, Drebin spends much of the movie mistakenly giving the villains vital information and then racing to cover his own mistakes. This leads to many scenes where the villains end up killing themselves, with Drebin in hapless pursuit. He's like the man who causes the accident but is the first on the scene to save the day and get the credit. Eventually, the film's villains use Frank's luck and aggression against him and get him kicked off the force. Drebin won't give up and inserts himself as an umpire in a baseball game, one which the Queen of England is reportedly going to be assassinated while attending. Drebin ruins the game, attacks a mind-controlled Reggie Jackson and causes a bench clearing brawl. Drebin then tries to shoot Jackson with a sleep dart but misses, instead hitting a fat woman who falls on top of Jackson, knocking him out and ending the threat. Whew! Following the exploits of Frank Drebin sort of takes it out of you -- man, that guy gets involved in EVERYTHING. He screws up an awful lot but always manages to get his guy in the end.
