10 Iconic Villains Who Were Barely In The Movie
5. John Doe - Seven (1995) - ~20 Minutes
When ranking bad guys from any point in movie history, John Doe is almost always amongst the best. Kevin Spacey portrays the epitome of evil in Seven, directed by David Fincher.
A serial killer who works all of his kills in a way that they come to represent the seven deadly sins, John Doe spends the majority of the film as an unseen foe working within the shadows and continually messing with our heroes Detectives William Somerset and David Mills. By the time Doe turns himself in to the police, roughly 90 minutes of runtime has passed, however even when in custody, Doe still takes something of a relatively backseat approach to the film's screen time.
The calmness, composure and unapologetic nature of Spacey's performance marks out John Doe as one of the scariest individuals ever to grace the world of film. There isn't even a flicker of empathy or regret present in Doe at any point of his time on screen, and the sombre ending of the film and Doe's arc goes a long way in ensuring the killer's legacy will live on with the audience for long after the end credits roll.
