Whilst we might all know him as the wise-cracking antagonist and cultural phenomenon from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, there was a time when Freddy Krueger was a sinister and largely invisible foe that was capable of terrifying us all from afar.

The original Nightmare on Elm Street follows the story of Nancy Thompson and her friends as they are picked off one by one by an unseen child murderer in their dreams. We get a first look at Freddy during Tina's dream, and everything about the scene has become iconic. From the unnaturally long arms scratching against the walls, the eerie sound of dustbins and cats screeching and, of course, the now infamous 'This is God' line, Freddy ensures that his performance leaves us all needing more and more from him.

Freddy would become the face of 1980s cinema and pop culture, appearing in everything from six more sequels to rap videos. His legacy is absolutely iconic, but it's all owed to the masterful way he is introduced by Wes Craven by ironically not being presented all too much.
