10 Images That Prove James Cameron Is Totally Insane

7. Deepsea Challenger

It's no big secret that James Cameron has a fascination with the ocean. Beyond just exploring the setting in his fictional features, Cameron is also passionate about visiting the very depths of the ocean himself. The Deepsea Challenge mission was the eighth deep-ocean expedition led by Cameron, making use of the Deepsea Challenger submersible. In 2012, Cameron piloted the sub (alone) to the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. One of the deepest points known to man, he traversed to a depth of 35,787 feet, which translates to almost 11km. As one of only very few people to attempt such an expedition alone, Cameron truly put himself at risk in order to realise one of his biggest dreams, and the mission proved hugely valuable in furthering our understanding of deep ocean life.
