7. Ben Affleck - Jack Cunningham (The Way Back)

It's not uncommon for actors to gravitate towards parts which reflect their own lives, and in 2020 nobody will tackle a more obviously personal role than Ben Affleck in Gavin O'Connor's sports drama The Way Back.

Affleck will play Jack Cunningham, an alcoholic basketball coach who struggles to balance his team's success with his own personal demons.

Given Affleck's own incredibly public struggles with alcohol abuse, it's easy to see the role as an unconventional sort of therapy for the actor, and one which should ensure he gives a literally lived-in and uncommonly authentic performance.

It can't be easy for any actor to go to such a real and deeply intimate place for our entertainment, and from the trailer released so far, it looks set to be Affleck's strongest performance in years.

Given how fantastically director O'Connor gave Nick Nolte a platform to examine his own alcoholism in 2011's sports classic Warrior - which netted Nolte a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination - it wouldn't be remotely surprising if Affleck courted major awards attention for the role.
