6. Island Of Terror (1966)
Starring the one and only Peter Cushing, Island of Terror, The Silicates, Night of the Silicates, Night the Silicates Came, Night the Creatures Came, The Creepers, whatever you want to call it, this movie teeters on the just plain bad or delightfully campy line. While searching for a cure for cancer, scientists created a silicone based life form which feeds on bone calcium. As a result, these creatures or Silicates, devoured their creators and suck the bones right out of their bodies, leaving sacks of flesh in their wake. Couple that with their ability to divide every six hours and you got a serious threat to contend with. Any Star Trek fan of the original series would spot the similarities to the Horta from the episode The Devil In The Dark (William Shatner's favourite episode) but the similarities are just that. No one from the Trek camp has admitted to it being a homage. Besides, the Horta didn't have tentacles that they could attack with, that turtle-like carapace nor could that make those great space age sounds by Barry Gray.
