By the 2010s, it's not unfair to say that Vince Vaughn's career had basically hit a brick wall, with the funnyman largely stuck starring in tired, played-out comedy vehicles for the most part - save for a polarising turn in True Detective's second season and a decent supporting role in Hacksaw Ridge.

But in 2017, he appeared in Brawl in Cell Block 99 - an exploitation-styled prison thriller that seemed like the furthest thing from Vaughn's wheelhouse, enough that some immediately screamed "miscast!"

After all, nothing in Vaughn's career up to this point indicated he was capable of portraying persuasive menace, what with the stink of his role in 1998's Psycho remake still wafting over his head.

But Vaughn took the assignment seriously and delivered an absolute knockout of a performance, fully convincing as a stone-built mountain of a man capable of dismantling the human body with fare ease.

It's certainly not the type of performance that wins Oscars, but it did successful strip away Vaughn's typecast persona and show him in a wholly new, very much welcome light.
