10 Incredible Movie Performances NOBODY Expected To Be Good

5. Tyler Perry - Gone Girl

Even accepting that David Fincher could probably get a great performance out of a baked potato, there were many raised eyebrows when actor-director Tyler Perry was cast in a major supporting role in his thriller Gone Girl.

Perry, best known for the slew of critically panned Madea films he's both starred in and directed over the years, simply seemed like a puzzling fit for a Fincher movie, enough that some even theorised he slunk his way into the movie by being a good friend of someone high-up at Fox.

But credit where it's due - Perry was perfect in the role of Nick Dunne's (Ben Affleck) high-flying lawyer Tanner Bolt, bringing a charisma and sly, dark humour to the part, enough that some analysts singled out him out as a contender for the Best Supporting Actor Ocsar.

It didn't pan out, but Perry nevertheless acquitted himself extremely well, delivering one of the best performances in a movie that's basically filled to the brim with peak acting.
