The reason people tend to dislike book-to-film adaptations is that most movies can't include everything written in a novel. Doing so would require too much screentime, and not everything that's written well necessarily works in a movie. Stephen Spielberg's Jurassic Park adaptation doesn't suffer too much from this, but some content was cut.

In the book, Dr. Grant, Tim, and Lex are chased and terrorized by the T-Rex in a lagoon. The book made a point of describing how well the dinosaur swam through the water, and it was a truly frightening chapter, but it didn't make it into the movie.

That's not to say Spielberg read the book, and never planned to add the scene; he absolutely did want it in the movie. He had visual effects wizard, Phil Tippett, work up extensive storyboards of what the scene would look like.

When it came time to film, the lagoon scene was scrapped, but before that happened, it went through several revisions. A lot of work went into bringing the scene to life, but the director chose not to include it in the end. Fortunately, you can watch the storyboards to see what it might have looked like, so it isn't completely lost.
