When word of a new Star Trek film franchise hit fans, the inevitable question of who would be returning soon followed. The most obvious choices were the members of the original series, who were ready, willing, and able to show up, and the short-list included William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy.

When the movie made it to theaters in 2009, Leonard Nimoy was there reprising his role as Ambassador Spock, but the Captain himself, James T. Kirk, was absent. Fans were disappointed to find that Shatner wasn't in the movie, but there was a plan for him.

While the movie was resetting the timeline, Kirk would still have been deceased, but that's hardly a problem for a Star Trek film. J. J. Abrams had planned to put Kirk into the movie despite his little problem with death, and to that end, he had Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci write a scene for him.

It would have had the older Kirk appear in the form of a hologram. It was never filmed, or storyboarded, which could have been the result of Shatner's public distancing himself from the project over concerns of continuity issues, and the fact that he was relegated to a minor role.
