10 Incredible Movies With Just ONE Awful Scene

7. The Host – Mourning

The Host, which is, like Snowpiercer, directed by Bong Joon-ho, is a terrific monster movie that blends horror, action, social commentary, drama and comedy into a seamless whole, making it a fascinating hybrid of different genres. Like the rest of Joon-ho’s filmography, it’s loaded with tonal shifts but while these are usually well-handled in the films, there’s a memorable (and not in a good way) slip-up during The Host.

After the film’s kid character (who is actually, for once, not annoying at all) is apparently killed by the film’s monster, her family (who are the film’s protagonists) have a breakdown at the makeshift memorial and start rolling all over the floor, wailing in grief. Thus, what is meant to be an emotionally intense scene is actually pretty funny.

It is possible that Joon-ho intended this scene to be comedic, but it shouldn’t have been; after all, this is a family mourning the apparent loss of a young girl. This insertion of comedy just feels awkward and inappropriate.

Thankfully, for the rest of the film The Host walks its tricky tonal tightrope with admirable skill.
