10 Incredible Movies With Just ONE Awful Scene
2. Munich – Worst. Sex Scene. Ever?
Munich, which is easily Steven Spielberg’s greatest film since Schindler’s List, is an excellent drama movie about a series of assassinations carried out by Israeli agents against those they felt were responsible for the Munich Olympics Massacre of the Israeli team at the hands of Palestinian operatives.
Munich is a largely successful meditation on the emptiness of vengeance filled with great writing, acting and directing, but weirdly enough, the scene where it really falters is its recreation of the titular event.
The scene where the athletes were killed at an airport is, in fairness, well-directed and has a good soundtrack… but it’s juxtaposed with protagonist Avner Kaufman (Eric Bana) having sex with his wife.
It’s obvious that the intention was to show the psychological trauma of everything Avner went through haunting him, but this scene was simply horrendous. Through this juxtaposition, it looks like Avner is getting off to the thought of the athletes being murdered and the slow-motion footage of Avner letting out a yell (supposedly out of emotional torment) is unintentionally hilarious more than anything else.
This sequence is nothing less than cringe-worthy and it was enormously disrespectful to everyone who died at that airport.
