2. The Final Lightsaber Battle (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace)

Granted, the pod racing scene was pretty cool too, but in a movie that was the textbook definition of disappointment, the climactic lightsaber battle was the only moment that delivered on Episode I's promise. Ray Park€™s stunt work deserves a lot of credit, and the fight has a real martial arts feel to it that the CGI infested follow-ups would lack. To go with the excellent choreography was a genuine emotional investment in the fight; Obi-Wan having to watch his mentor get slain, unable to do anything, gave in an emotional gut punch that none of the more desperate moments earlier had succeeded at. It may not have lived up to the legacy of the fights between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, but this scene was exactly what everyone was craving and gave hope that the following films could follow suit.
