4. Riddles In The Dark - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
While The Hobbit may not have been as awful as some of the films on this list, it was the epitome of wasted potential, overlong and anticlimactic. It did deliver, however, on the one scene that everyone was dying to see. The riddles in the dark mental battle between Bilbo and Gollum was everything fans hope for and then some. Having Andy Serkis reprise his role as Gollum was the highlight of the film and his growing series of riddles was a nice spin on a classic action finale. Considering The Lord Of The Rings penchant for physical battles, this presented a skirmish of wits instead, proving the true value of Bilbos intelligence. The subsequent Hobbit movies could have done well to learn from this. Rather than attempting the impossible task of matching its predecessors battles, it could have taken a smaller-scale approach to conflict.
