10 Incredibly Annoying Characters Who Almost Ruined 2013 Movies

9. Chris - Drinking Buddies

Drinking Buddies could have been a much better movie, especially when you consider the clout of its cast - between Jake Johnson, Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendrick, Ron Livingston, and even Jason Sudeikis, Drinking Buddies there was more than enough talent to make the fact that it was completely ignored seem odd. Unfortunately, the story was really brought down by Ron Livingston's portrayal of Chris, a bookworm who is dating Kate, played by Olivia Wilde. When we meet him, he is the typical, uninteresting boyfriend who is just trying to make his girl happy, and though he was easy to sympathize with at first, there was clearly something off during every interaction he had with Kate. It's during their weekend trip away that Chris's character starts derailing the movie, or more appropriately how he is written. He's presented as the villain of the piece, because he cheats on his girlfriend with Jill while on a long hike (which is pretty much an established movie euphemism for sex in the woods by now) but the director still tries to make sure that we root for all of the characters' happiness. So we're encouraged to feel conflicted about Chris, at the same time as knowing that he is the guy we're supposed to hate (hence why he dumps Kate, but Jill and Luke are allowed an open ending.) The film tries to be clever in its writing, but the way it tries to sell Chris down the river as the bad guy just feels a little tasteless.
