10 Incredibly Disturbing Horror Movie Moments
1. That's Not What Scissors Were Intended For - Antichrist
Lars Von Trier makes another appearance. This is hardly a shock as the filmmaker has always toed the line between artistic expression and deliberate shock value. Antichrist is easily one of his most provocative works. It sees a couple, portrayed by Willem Defoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, retreat to the woods to attempt to process the tragic, untimely death of their child. But Gainsbourg's character begins to experience some religious and apocalyptic delusions and to save any spoilers, begins to lose her sanity.
The scene in question features some horrendously visceral genital mutilation. Unfortunately, the majority of this is genuinely shown and is a tough image to describe. Gainsbourg bolts Defoe to a grindstone and uses a blunt object to smash his scrotum. She then brings him to climax, and he produces blood. This is hardly the end of the nightmare, as afterwards she takes a pair of scissors and performs a self-circumcision on herself.
This is the kind of scene that has you crossing your legs for an entire week after watching. Writing it was akin to experiencing the process again.
If you enjoy expressionistic avant-garde cinema, then it's a must-see. But be warned: what you watch will not be pleasant.
