10 Incredibly Popular Movie Heroes Who Are Totally Overrated

2. Harry Potter - The Harry Potter Series

Few characters in movie history have grown from child to young adult in tandem with their viewers. Notwithstanding Harry Potter's popularity among adults as well, a generation of children have been weaned on the movie adaptations of J. K. Rowling's hugely successful novels. But is Harry all he's cracked up to be? The trouble with Harry Potter as a hero is that he's just not particularly good at anything - apart from flying, he's very average at most of the other classes he takes at Hogwarts and seems to get by more on his scar-headed reputation than any actual smarts of his own. Hermione Granger not only outshines him in academia (admittedly not the quality of a traditional hero) but also in figuring out most of the obstacles they have to overcome (surely the job of the hero). Without her, it's probably safe to say that Harry wouldn't have made it past the first movie. In a sense, Harry Potter represents the same kind of dull virtue which embodied Frodo in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, with Hermione stepping in for Sam and doing most of the legwork to propel the storyline onwards. It's just a shame that, for such a huge cultural phenomenon, the character was ultimately so boring.
