10 Incredibly Popular Movie Heroes Who Are Totally Overrated
3. Superman - The Superman Series
Superman is without a doubt one of the most popular, well-loved heroes in movie history - indeed, for much of the 20th century he has been an icon of truth and justice to millions of fans. But is he really all he's cracked up to be? There are two problems with Superman that make him rather overrated. The first one is perhaps obvious - his powers. Is there anything Superman can't do? The fact that he gets one-upped by villains like Lex Luther points to the fact that in one department at least - brains and intellect - he never quite lives up to his physical superpowers. But the second issue is even more problematic - his personality. Despite having an alter ego, neither Superman nor Clarke Kent are all that interesting: the latter is a perpetually bumbling fool (it might be part of his cover, but it's a fairly uninteresting cover to go for) while the former is a sanctimonious do-gooder about as much fun as a Boy Scout at a party. You could argue that perhaps Superman realises the great weight of responsibility on his back and suppresses his emotions, or that, since he isn't actually human, he deals with and expresses them in different ways. Either way, it's hard to engage with the character on that level, but on the flip-side it does afford the character the potential to develop in a way that other human superheroes never could, assimilating emotions from an alien perspective. If only there was a filmmaker brave enough to take the franchise down those avenues in a more complex manner than Zack Snyder.
