10 Incredibly Popular Movie Heroes Who Are Totally Overrated

6. Jack Sparrow - The Pirates Of The Caribbean Series

Anyone sitting down to watch a blockbuster movie adaptation of a theme park ride expecting rounded, interesting characters deserves every ounce of disappointment they get. But to be fair to Johnny Depp, the result could have been a lot worse - Depp opted to craft a character removed from the stereotypical snarling pirate and offer something more quirky and off-beat. It's a shame, then, that the swaggering, semi-drunk Jack Sparrow seems to act exactly the same in every scene, regardless of the tone of the story and the behaviour of the other characters around him. Worse still, this monotonous performance continues on virtually unchanged throughout the rest of the movies in the franchise, to the point where in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides even Depp himself looks increasingly bored with the role, as if wondering how much longer he'll be able to keep it up. But as long as the series continues to make big bucks (and we can blame cinema-goers for its ongoing box office success - another sequel is already in the works) the one-note Keith Richards impressions will continue lining Depp's pockets with far too many pieces of eight for him to turn them down. The fact that Jack Sparrow has been named by some critics "the defining icon of the 2000s" points to just how low expectations have sunk - all the way down into Davy Jones' locker, it would seem.
