4. Han Solo - The Star Wars Trilogy

Few people would deny that Han Solo in the original Star Wars was as cool as the proverbial cucumber. From the moment he first appeared on screen in the cantina, where as everyone apart from George Lucas knows "Han shot first", taking out Greedo without so much as a blink of an eye, audiences knew the character was something special - a true icon of science fiction cinema. But the qualities which made him so appealing in the first movie - his moral ambiguity and concern with profit over people - slowly started to erode as the series progressed. While this wasn't in and of itself strictly speaking a bad thing (if a character doesn't grow, they tend to stagnate) Han's progression to plain old hero took away a lot of the initial spark - the cool outlaw smuggler became the not quite so cool good guy general. A missed opportunity might have been to expand on his background in the Star Wars prequels, although it goes without saying, only if George Lucas hadn't had any involvement. Still, Harrison Ford more than made up for this with Indiana Jones, a character who literally oozed effortless cool and irresistible charm throughout the series of movies he - wait a minute... Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull! I guess we should all be thankful that the curse of George Lucas won't be afflicting Star Wars VII...
