10 Indications The Golden Globes Have Given Us For The Oscars

2. Matthew McConaughey Is The New Front-Runner For Best Actor

Building on that last point, one of those surprise acting defeats came when Matthew McConaughey took home the award for Best Actor In A Drama, beating out Chiwetel Ejiofor€™s phenomenal portrayal of Solomon Northup. Ejiofor had seemingly been pegged to win by every outlet, so this came as a complete shock to everyone and truly flips the race on its head. Leonardo DiCaprio also took home an acting award home for Best Actor In A Comedy/Musical for his energetic and flat-out wildly contagious portrayal of millionaire stockbroker Jordan Belfort, but I don€™t think he stands a chance getting nominated against other likely candidates such as Robert Redford, Joaquin Phoenix, and Tom Hanks, let alone the one-two punch of Ejiofor and McConaughey. And let€™s face it; the Academy apparently loves snubbing DiCaprio anyway. Back to McConaughey, though: he does deliver a brilliant performance as Ron Woodroof, a man smuggling in drugs not approved by the FDA to help those with AIDs, including himself. McConaughey goes through a deep character transformation from a homophobic selfish man to somewhat of a local hero standing up to an inept FDA. His impeccable chemistry with Golden Globe winner - and probable Supporting Actor winner - Jared Leto€™s transvestite business partner makes for some genuinely touching and/or amusing scenes. This isn€™t McConaughey€™s only captivating performance of 2013, though, as he also starred in Mud and had a brief stint in The Wolf of Wall Street. What€™s most important is that like a lot of categories, both panels seemingly agree on the decision. Who knows what's going to happen?
