10 Most Inept Film Directors

8. Andy Milligan

Legacy Of Blood An openly gay man who hated women, Milligan directed an abundance of ineptly made horror and exploitation films. He was apparently a very ill tempered and demanding director which is amusing because he couldn't direct for toffee. He picked fights with everyone, and as a tee totaller he was known to blow a gasket if anyone dared to smoke, drink alcohol or do drugs near him. Most of Milligan's work features horrible people sitting around bitching about each other and the world who eventually get their comeuppance in a display of didactic morality. To cover up his low budgets - frequently under $10,000 - he was famous for using the 'swirl' technique during violent scenes to distract the viewer from the shoddiness of the special effects. Cinematic atrocities perpetrated by Andy Milligan include The Ghastly Ones (which inexplicably ended up on the Video Nasties list), Fleshpot on 42nd Street and The Degenerates. He is widely considered to be the Worst Horror Movie Director Ever - he makes H G Lewis look like Luchino Visconti. I personally find his films intolerable to watch as they are so inept, not to mention the extremely crap acting and portrayal of so many unlikeable characters. Everyone is up to something and they kvetch away in an annoying manner for long periods of time without some action to mitigate their mean spiritedness. One thing is sure, if a cult around Milligan does appear, it will be full of morons.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
