This largely forgotten Denzel Washington horror flick had an intriguing premise, but managed to undo all its good work in literally the final shot of the film. Washington stars as Detective John Hobbes, who delivers the first line of the film, crawling along the ground near death, before telling us that "this is the story of how I nearly died." Unfortunately the final 'payoff' for this interesting premise proves to be a stinker.

The movie reveals that Detective Hobbes was the man responsible for capturing serial killer Edgar Reese, who is about to be executed despite actually being innocent. It is slowly revealed that Reese was possessed by a demon at the time of the killings, and now that he is executed, the demon continues to transfer from host to host.

In the movie's climactic scene, Hobbes sets a trap for the demon that will see them both die. With the body it has possessed slowly dying, the demon jumps inside the body of the dying Hobbes, who has poisoned himself to give the villain no chance of survival.

The film really should of ended here, Hobbes making the ultimate sacrifice to defeat the demon. But instead we get a ham fisted ending, with the voice that opened the film revealed to be from the demon, not Hobbes, despite Denzel saying the line. The demon then states "remember, this is the story of how I nearly died", before possessing a stray cat passing by, and managing to kill any remaining credibility the film had.
