10 Infuriating Flaws That Ruin Otherwise Awesome Directors
10. Lens Flares Everywhere - J.J. Abrams
Accomplishments: In addition to creating popular TV shows Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe, Abrams has directed a glut of successful movies, including Mission: Impossible III, two Star Trek movies, Super 8, and, of course, the third-highest grossing film in history, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The Flaw: Abrams has a much-mocked fetish for lens flare, to the point that on his Star Trek movies, he even shined powerful lights into the camera lens to enhance the effect. Super 8 also suffers with this, and the result is a distracting visual flourish that takes away from the rest of what's on-screen. Plus, once you see it, it's hard to un-see it.
Thankfully, Abrams' wife was the voice of reason and told J.J. to tone down the flares, and so The Force Awakens kept the effect pretty conspicuous. Now that Abrams is back to working on his own projects, though, will we see the flares make a return? Time will tell.
