7. White Flag – Bad Education

Dido's White Flag, while not necessarily a song that is revered by all, is in many ways a perfect encapsulation of pop music from the '00s. This song was seemingly inescapable during this period of time so whenever it features in a TV series, from The Inbetweeners to The Sopranos, it firmly dates the action to these early years of the 21st century.

Bad Education - no, not the Jack Whitehall series - was one of 2019's best dramas which was brought to life by a fantastic ensemble led by Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney. The film told the real-life story of teachers Frank Tassone and Pam Gluckin, played by Jackman and Janney respectively, who embezzled $6.5 million from their Long Island public school. The decision to use White Flag during the end credits was an inspired choice, reminding its audience that the events depicted took place around the time of this Dido song.

Using this track manages to both take audiences back in time almost 20 years while also eliciting a chuckle with this, seemingly out of nowhere, throwback to the recognisably overplayed Dido hit. Not since Justin Timerblake's Cry Me A River was used in Ladybird, providing the soundtrack to a teenage house party, has a film managed to use music to transport an audience back to the '00s so successfully.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
