10 Ingenious Uses Of End Credits Songs In Movies
6. Heroes (German Version) – Jojo Rabbit
While Jojo Rabbit is a fairly mixed bag of a film, with its comedy and drama never truly gelling together comfortably, Taika Waititi managed to compile a brilliant soundtrack. Music is obviously an important part of Waititi's life and career, from his work on Flight of the Conchords to directing numerous music videos, and it is extremely well utilised here too.
To immerse an audience in the film's setting of Nazi Germany, Waititi deploys two pop songs: Jack White's Mit all deiner Liebe (I'm A Believer) and The Beatles' Komm, gib mir deine Hand (I Want to Hold Your Hand). Spliced throughout the film, these German covers inject the proceedings with an energy and sense of humour while also reminding us of the location.
The best example of this is the song which plays during the end credits, David Bowie's German recording of Heroes. The song, literally translated to 'Helden', plays as the titular Jojo and Elsa suddenly break out in a bout of joyful dancing, after the announcement that the war is over, and continues over the end credits. While these songs were released decades after the film's setting and are the only example of German spoken in a film, somehow these German renditions of pop classics work and give the film a sense of freshness.
