The Theory

In this alternate sequel to Terminator 2, it's revealed that the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenneger) actually failed to protect John Connor (Jude Collie), who was killed by either the T-1000 (Robert Patrick) or another Terminator.

Why It Might Be True

A Twitter fan theory picked up traction following the release of Dark Fate's first trailer, and it actually makes a lot of sense.

The theory points to the T-800 appearing as an aged Terminator living in isolation, likely as a result of him failing to protect John and literally having no other reason to exist.

As for Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton)? She's desperately seeking out the presence of new Terminators, because if they keep getting sent back in time, then it suggests that the war isn't over and Skynet hasn't yet prevailed.

John's death would also explain the importance of new protagonist Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes), with the theory suggesting that she may be the mother of a new resistance leader, and that the creation of a leader is as inevitable as many believe Judgment Day to be.

And finally, it would explain how this film is a "direct" T2 sequel despite John only reportedly cameoing as a child, while the T-800 and Sarah Connor are much older.

Don't be surprised if that John Connor cameo is nothing more than a quick glimpse of him being murdered by a Terminator.
