10 Insane Movie Box-Office Records That Will Probably Never Be Broken

6. Twelfth Weekend Domestic Gross

It wasn't just Leo that was king of the world when Titanic began smashing box-office records left, right and centre, and perhaps unsurprisingly, many of them remain untouched to this day.

Among Titanic's many, many financial achievements lies this overlooked, but nonetheless impressive accomplishment; in the twelfth weekend of its initial theatrical release, it managed to pull in over $17.5 million in the U.S.

That might not sound too amazing on the surface, but look at it this way; blockbuster sci-fi Ghost In The Shell, starring the bankable Scarlett Johansson, recently took in $18.6 million on its first weekend. Granted, it performed below expectations, but on its twelfth, it'll be barely playing in theatres, let alone raking in $17.5 million.

Most blockbusters make the bulk of their cash after about four or five weeks; after that, any earnings are just loose change. But Titanic was earning the type of money that a lot of studios would be pleased with on a third or fourth weekend (and some would be pleased with on a first or second), twelve weekends after it debuted.

It's an incredible achievement, and given the amount of big-budget releases that grace our screens in today's climate, is one that may never be replicated.

Whenever a film opens - be it Logan, Beauty and The Beast or Kong - there's a Guardians Of The Galaxy, Fate Of The Furious or Alien: Covenant just lurking on the horizon, waiting to cannibalize any potential long-term - or, in this case, twelfth-week - earnings.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
