7. The Aliens Are Actually Demons - Signs
Signs is a very interesting movie in that it is an extremely divisive one. Personally, I think that it holds some wonderful and truly haunting scenes in its discovery of aliens who have invaded this former preachers home in a slow-burn of a scheme to announce their arrival before invading and taking over. The film comes under a lot of heat for the ending, which has the aliens attacking the home of the primary characters (Mel Gibson, Joaqin Phoenix, Rory Culkin, and Abigail Breslin). Abigail Breslins character has a nervous tick in which she can never finish a glass of water, so the ominously-filmed glasses find themselves in about every interior shot in the film. When an alien actually gets in the home, Phoenix iscovers the aliens reaction to pure water, and utilizes the reaction to free his home. This poses the obvious question as to why aliens who are allergic to something would invade a planet which is 70% this material. Even though Shaymalan has disavowed this theory, the question has been answered - the aliens are actually demons, and the reason the water can burn them is because it is in the house of a minster, and the water is holy. It actually makes sense in the context of the film, and brings the religious aspects of the film completely home, and its entertaining enough to make the Dean Winchester in all of us very proud.
