10 Insane Movie Theories You Won't Believe

5. Agent Smith Is The One

Unlike 2001, The Matrix is designed to seem like it invites interpretation, whilst in reality its myriad mental leaps and mysteries are actually intricately planned out and explained over the course of its three films. Yes, there were two other films, that's just something we're going to have to accept. It's another of those classic movie trilogies, like Star Wars or Indiana Jones, that never needs a sequel. Despite the fact that the Wachowskis explained every angle of the series with the exposition-heavy Reloaded and Revolutions - along with spin-off The Animatrix, which included a feature-length history of the world prior to the films - which laid out everything from what The Matrix actually was to Neo's place in it. Regardless, people have found a little wiggle room in which to embed their own readings.

A favourite of the internet is that Neo is a machine himself, and the "real world" of Zion is another level of human-created simulation, designed to keep technological advances in check. Which is cute, but doesn't really make sense. Far more brain-wrinkling is the claim that Agent Smith is actually The One, not Neo €“ or rather, they both are. See, Zion is said to have been destroyed six times over The Matrix's history. We see six agents throughout the series. Smith himself claims to "hate this place" and can break the laws of the simulation in the same way as Neo. That's because was the original €œone€, who went insane during six simulations, causing him lash out against the machines and try to kill Morpheus. Which means that it all ends not with a battle between good and evil, but Smith and Neo teaming up to destroy The Matrix because they both despise it. That...that actually does make a lot of sense?
