10 Insane Over The Top Horror Movies

7. Hobo With A Shotgun (2011)

Prisoners of the Ghostland

Beginning life as a fake trailer from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse double feature, Hobo With a Shotgun is a slice of gleefully unapologetic grindhouse goodness which stars the great Rutger Hauer.

The film opens with a nameless homeless man (Hauer) arriving in Hope Town, which has been renamed to the more apt Scum Town, where the townspeople are terrorised by the ruthless crime family who’ve taken over. It’s only minutes after stepping into town where the protagonist witnesses the cruelty of the gang when he observes them publicly execute one of their own family by decapitating them with a barbed wire noose.

All the hero wants is to scrape enough money together to buy a lawnmower. But when he realises just how crime-ridden the city is, he chooses to purchase a shotgun instead and becomes a vigilante. This puts him in the sights of the crime family, and all-out carnage breaks lose.

Containing just as many crass one-liners as it does gore, Hobo With a Shotgun takes great pleasure in indulging in all the typical B-Movie tropes. Everything is turned up to a gnarly extreme, with the result being an enormously entertaining time that viewers aren't supposed to take seriously.
