10 Insane Over The Top Horror Movies

6. Fried Barry (2020)

Prisoners of the Ghostland
Shudder

Fried Barry, the feature debut from Ryan Kruger, sees the titular drug addict (an intense performance from former stuntman Gary Green) abducted by aliens after taking heroin. One of the extra-terrestrial visitors then takes control of Barry's body and proceeds to embark on a drug-fuelled odyssey throughout Cape Town’s seedy underbelly.

Wandering the streets with a glazed expression, the alien visitor is thrown from one bizarre encounter to the next. Whether it’s a spontaneous pregnancy or a chainsaw-wielding psychopath, it’s impossible to know what ludicrous scenario Barry will end up in. No matter how twisted or psychedelic things get, though, this flick is a riotous blast from beginning to end.

Making the experience the more surreal is Kruger’s visceral direction. Frequently manipulating and distorting the sound design whilst deploying trance-like editing alongside some garish camera angles, Fried Barry is given a grungy quality in which everything feels slightly off.

Amongst the handful of sequences scattered throughout this entry that relish in sickening gross-out horror, there’s likewise plenty of humour and genuine sentimentality to be found in Fried Barry, too. The result is a mind-melting horror film that’s as unique as it is out of this world.
