10 Insane Over The Top Horror Movies

4. The Toxic Avenger (1984)

Prisoners of the Ghostland
Troma Entertainment

The home of outcast cinema, Troma Entertainment is the place to go to see all things gross, schlocky, and depraved. This indie production studio has given horror fans the delight of watching the likes of Tromeo and Juliet, Terror Firmer, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, and dozens of other trashy exploitation flicks, each as extravagantly over-the-top as the last.

However, the quintessential Troma flick is undoubtedly The Toxic Avenger.

Helmed by Troma co-founders Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman, the plot sees a meek janitor transform into the titular radioactive hero (played by Mitch Cohen) when he falls into a drum of toxic waste. Now possessing superhuman size and strength (but becoming hideously deformed), the janitor becomes Tromaville’s newest superhero and makes it his mission to clean up the town by taking out its corrupt criminals alongside those who bullied him in the most violent ways possible.

Unapologetically campy and shameless, this splatter flick holds absolutely nothing back. Even with its incredibly small budget, the filmmaking duo achieve some phenomenally revolting effects, with an infamous head crushing scene gaining notoriety.

Spawning sequels, a video game, a cartoon series, and a reboot currently in the works, Toxie is the undisputed king of cult.
