10 Insane Over The Top Horror Movies
3. Braindead (1992)
Before he became a household name after directing the multiple Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy, Kiwi filmmaker Peter Jackson cut his teeth in the industry making grimy, low budget exploitation flicks like Bad Taste, Meet The Feebles, and Braindead.
Also known as Dead Alive in the US, this outrageous gorefest sees Wellington become overrun by flesh-eating zombies when a rat-monkey bites everyman protagonist Lionel’s (Timothy Balme) domineering mother while at the zoo. Her grotesque zombie transformation during a family lunch sets the tone for a deliriously stomach-churning outing which only escalates in absurdity from here.
A zombie baby, a priest with a proficiency in kung fu, and a lawnmower massacre which used a mammoth 300 litres of fake blood are just some examples of the madness on display in this flick. Jackson fully embraces the silliness of his picture as he indulges in the cartoonish sense of humour without missing a beat.
As hilarious as Braindead is, the real standout is its practical effects. As creatively executed as they are fiendishly grizzly, Braindead is a testament to Jackson’s skills as a filmmaker. Considered to be one of the bloodiest films of all time, this horror is a wild ride.
