10 Insane Over The Top Horror Movies
2. Mandy (2018)
Directed and co-written by Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow), Mandy is a phantasmagoric horror that drips in an insatiable pulpy atmosphere in every glorious frame.
Set in 1983, the film sees alcoholic logger Red (Nicholas Cage in another spectacular Cage-esque performance) embark on a quest of revenge against a religious cult after they kidnap and kill his girlfriend (Andrea Riseborough), the titular Mandy of the film’s title.
While there’s still plenty of gore to be savoured in this flick - with axes, decapitations, and a gnarly chainsaw fight being just some of the highlights - the real star of this show are its visuals.
Inspired by metal album and horror movie box art, Mandy is a kaleidoscopic whirlwind of vibrant neon, hallucinogenic imagery, and hypnotic film grain. Cosmatos’ second feature is nothing short of visually stunning. Every frame draws viewers deeper into its dreamlike landscape, which is only further enhanced by an intoxicating score by Jóhann Jóhannsson.
Throw in a bunch of psychedelic visuals, a demonic biker gang, and a noteworthy performance from Linus Roache as the cult's charismatic leader, and Mandy becomes a bold and euphoric cinematic experience that horror fans are guaranteed to adore.
